Tucked beneath the railway arches of Southwark’s Union Street, Bala Baya captures the laid-back energy of Tel Aviv’s café culture, reimagined through a London lens.
Designed by Afroditi Krassa in a style dubbed “Desert Bauhaus,” the interiors feature burgundy banquettes, hand-laid terrazzo floors, and an open kitchen anchored by a custom-built pitta oven.
Chef Eran Tibi’s menu revolves around punchy, shareable Eastern Mediterranean plates—think lamb-stuffed dumplings, bitter-orange chicken with kimchi, and burnt babka with a rich espresso glaze.
House-made Gazoz sodas and cocktails round out the experience, blending botanical freshness with bold Israeli soul.
Recognised by the Michelin Guide, Bala Baya offers a buzzy, sun-drenched alternative to the city’s standard dining formats.
