The Best Pubs in Wandsworth
Some of the best pubs in Wandsworth are in our opinion some of the best in London. You wouldn’t be dismissed for referring to Wandsworth as the delicious filling within a Clapham, Battersea and Putney club sandwich.
Located perfectly between the three, Wandsworth is a quaint and charming part of the South West London pub scene and shouldn’t be overlooked with many delights to be uncovered around every corner.
Whether you’re looking to get quizzical, improve upon your Gaelic dialect or sit by the river on a bank holiday weekend, Wandsworth has you covered. It’s also built beside a 24-hour McDonald’s for those of you who never eat junk food before 1am.
The King's Arms, Wandsworth
The Kings Arms boasts the best of both worlds.
In the summertime, they offer the best beer garden in Wandsworth with a burger shack serving delicious flavours that always come with a side of curly fries.
Then in the winter, you can book a cosy table in the corner and enjoy a pub quiz with your friends for just £3 per player. We recently attended a January edition and were terrified to discover it was Scottish-themed in honour of Robert Burns night. Sadly we didn’t do too well, but the first-placed team looked happy with their £50 bar tab!
Regardless of your general knowledge, The Kings Arms is an enjoyable experience for all and is located right in the heart of Wandsworth. If you want to try your hand at mini golf, digital darts or even axe throwing after your tipple, the Gravity Centre, Strike and Boom Battle are all a short stroll away.
Have to try: Chicken Katsu Burger
Perfect for: Pub quiz nights
Approx price for 2 people: £50
Spread Eagle, Wandsworth
The Spread Eagle is a grade II listed building and is undoubtedly the most satisfying venue on the eye. The pub houses 21 beautiful boutique bedrooms to give you the true experience of a traditional British Inn.
Once you step inside the glistening glass doors, you’ll feel yourself taken back to the Victorian times. Board games are not to be ruled out with large leather armchairs and quieter midweek evenings to be enjoyed.
If you’re a roast dinner buff, The Spread Eagle is to die for. The roast pork belly in particular certainly hits the spot!
Have to try: Roast Pork Belly
Perfect for: Sunday Roasts & History Toasts
Approx price for 2 people: £80
The Hop Pole, Wandsworth
Honestly, any pub that shows live sport and has an extensive Thai Menu is fine with us.
In fact, the food here is so good that people were coming down just to get a takeaway!
The most delightful thing about the Hop Pole is how reasonably priced it is. In a world where the average London pint is now exceeding £6, the Hop Pole truly lives up to its reputation as the old man’s pub of Wandsworth by turning back the clock and allowing you to drink and dine on the cheap. You can even treat yourself to sausage, chips and beans for just a fiver!
Live sport is great down here too. It never gets too busy and with four screens dotted around, there isn’t a bad seat in the house. Unless your team is losing, of course.
Have to try: Pad Thai
Perfect for: Live Sport
Approx price for 2 people: £30
The East Hill, Wandsworth
This country-style gastropub, run by Young’s, is one for the foodies. You know the food is good when their website’s header photo is of their proud head chef.
They take food so seriously here there are monthly supper clubs and daily specials. Head chef John’s mission is to bring the best seasonal food to the table and we believe he certainly achieves this. Their Sunday roast is probably the best in Wandsworth and if you’re going on any other day try anything with truffle, they just get it right.
The country feel of the pub is nice to have in Wandsworth as well. It’s an open space and quietly tucked away in the side streets so it’s never rammed.
A good one to meet with large groups or a place to take your parents.
Have to try: Their roast
Perfect for: Large bookings
Approx price for 2 people: £80
The Ship, Wandsworth
Ah, The Ship. Chances are if you’ve spoken to anyone that lives in South West London, they’ve been to The Ship on a bank holiday Sunday.
Honestly, I’m not sure how the tradition started, because the area by the river is so small it can probably only hold a couple hundred people, but it doesn’t stop pub-goers of London coming from far and wide to enjoy a sunset by the river.
In fact, it gets so busy at The Ship that sometimes a queue forms from 11am with no one in the group thinking it’d be smart to bring a bottle of sun cream. Who cares though, right? This is probably as close to a beach day as you’re going to get in the city.
Have to try: Jumping the queue
Perfect for: Bank Holiday Sunday
Approx price for 2 people: £100
Queen Adelaide, Wandsworth
A truly British pub experience can be found at the Queen Adelaide, located on the corner of the Wandsworth Park.
Dog owners and dog lovers, rejoice! This pub prides itself on being dog-friendly inside and out and you can regularly meet the friendliest of breeds in the beer garden on a sunny afternoon. What’s more, there are plenty of free treats on offer for your pup at the bar!
Granted, the dogs get cheaper service than us humans – a traditional sausage and mash sets you back a rather indulgent £18 – but they also do pub quizzes on Wednesday nights. Don’t get too cocky though, it’s worth noting you may need to have a degree in quantum physics to answer half the questions.
How long is the longest bridge on the River Thames to the nearest centimetre? Yeah, good luck with that. At least there are plenty of beers on tap to get you through it.
Have to try: Al Fresco dining – bring your dogs!
Perfect for: British pub food
Approx price for 2 people: £40
The Garratt Tavern, Wandsworth
Okay, we’re being a bit cheeky here. As a resident of Wandsworth, living within walking distance of The Garratt Tavern, it would be rude of us to not include our local on this list.
The Garratt Tavern may look like an empty, quiet pub from the outside – but that’s because everyone is packed into the beer garden.
Completely hidden away, it’s a huge open space which also features a large hut with international flags aplenty – Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans will love it here.
Rugby days have never tasted so sweet and in the summer they fire up a Brazilian-themed BBQ, perfect if you want to host a sports-viewing party in the area.
Have to try: Live sport in the beer garden
Perfect for: Parties & pints
Approx price for 2 people: £30
Tir Na N Og, Wandsworth
There’s no typo here! The Tir Na N Og is just down the road from The Garratt Tavern and offers the most Irish drinking experience you could wish for in Wandsworth.
You can’t miss it, Irish flags adorn the outside of the venue and inside you’ll find sports screens and Guinness to tide you over every evening.
Have to try: Pronouncing the name correctly
Perfect for: Guinness
Approx price for 2 people: £20
The Alma, Wandsworth
The Alma is the classic post-work watering hole for all Wandsworth-goers. It’s located directly opposite the Wandsworth Town overground station, meaning commuters are tempted to swing by every time they make their way home.
It is always busy here, there’s a great vibe and the menu is appealing also. Fish and chips are a British pub staple and there’s no scrimping on the tartare sauce at The Alma.
It’s probably the busiest pub in Wandsworth (outside of The Ship) so it’s worth booking a table, but if you’re looking for a casual after work drink or to bring a date to a pub with a nice vibe, The Alma is the winner.
Have to try: Post-work pints
Perfect for: Date night
Approx price for 2 people: £50
