Fat Penguin Comedy Club, Birmingham

Located in the leafy suburb of Moseley just south of the city, you will find a hidden gem called Fat Penguin. Established in 2011 and run entirely on donations, Fat Penguin is the UK’s only 100% non-profit, crowd funded comedy club that features top comics from the UK circuit and beyond. Entry is free but donations are welcomed at the end of the night, so after you wipe away your tears of laughter, dig deep and contribute a generous sum if you wish! The club only however runs once a week each Wednesday so be aware it can get quite cramped. The comedy club is held in the upper room of the Patrick Kavanaugh pub and the atmosphere is informal and friendly.

Glee Club, Birmingham

Located in the Arcadian Centre on Hurst Street’s Chinese Quarter, this comedy club offers a mix of stand-up comedy, live music and even some tasty food & drinks. The Glee Club was first opened in 1994 and ever since has grown to become the city’s most popular spot for a great comedy night. The regular comedy show consists of three acts from the UK and followed by a compere. Unlike many other comedy clubs, the seating for all comedy gigs is arranged in a theatre style (comfy bums!) and the clubs bars close during the performance. There have been some big artists who have showcased their material at the Glee including: Michael McIntyre, Lee Evans and John Bishop. The club is very welcoming and friendly, staff are helpful and the general atmosphere was positive. There is wheel chair access and security staff are always on duty to give a helping hand. You can pre order drinks and snacks to be delivered to your table (so don’t wonder off during the show!).

The Old Joint Stock Theatre, Birmingham

Based on the bustling Temple Row in the centre of Birmingham, you will find a beautiful Victorian bank building which is now home to a theatre and pub. Whilst not exclusively a comedy club, the venue often hosts comedy nights which are worth checking out. The building itself is admirable, with gorgeous décor and designs. For summer times, there is a terrace at the rear of the building with several tables so you can get the sunshine in whilst enjoying some food and drink. The staff are very accommodating and offered us to try some delicious pies. They have an extensive menu for all seasons so plenty of choices when visiting! All events and comedy shows can be found on their website so be sure to check out what’s on. The venue is a local favourite and can get very busy during the weekends so do plan before you visit!

The Comedy Junction, Birmingham

In the north of the city, at the Royal Town of Sutton you will find a quirky pub called the Station which has been home to the Comedy Junction since 2001. Known as: “the small club with the big names” we can agree they definitely live up to this and deliver their promise. There’s tons of great gigs on throughout the month so don’t be shy to visit and get roasted by a stand-up comedian in the process! Food and drinks are widely available including juicy burgers and Mac n Cheese so be sure to fill your stomach up before the laughter kicks in! The venue is mediocre in size however it gives off cosy vibes and the atmosphere is great.
